Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs officially set the date for the CD7 special election, and candidates are lining up to fill the vacant seat. The Arizona Globe previously reported on the death of longtime Congressman Raul Grijalva. Governor Hobbs swiftly set the primary date for July 15, 2025, and the general election date for September 23, 2025.

Arizona’s Secretary of State, Adrian Fontes, has made headlines with an exciting announcement: he is seriously considering a run for the CD-7 congressional seat. The district holds special significance for him as it is where he was born and raised. Although he initially playfully hinted at possibly challenging Governor Hobbs in a primary, he appeared to backtrack on that idea shortly afterward. However, Fontes will officially enter the race for the vacant congressional seat by filing a formal intent to run. He has yet to finalize his decision.

There is a strong wave of love and support among progressives for Pima County Supervisor Adelita Grijalva, daughter of the late Representative. Based on her potential actions, there is speculation that Fontes is hesitant to commit. In Grijalva’s Facebook post, she announced she wouldn’t state her intentions until after her father’s services.

She stated, “As my family grieves and prepares to celebrate the life and legacy of my amazing dad, Raúl Grijalva, I’m fielding many questions about the future of Congressional District 7. Many have asked me if I would consider running to continue my father’s legacy. In between tears and hugs, my family and I are processing our profound loss as well as that of our community, State, and nation.”

She continued, “By the outpouring of love and support our family has received since my dad’s passing, it is clear that our community wants a progressive voice grounded in our shared values to continue our fight for those who can’t, defend working people, protect our seniors, our veterans and our environment from a seemingly never-ending onslaught of attacks. Once my dad’s funeral services are completed, I will announce my decision as to whether I will run for Congressional District 7. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience as our family mourns our tremendous loss in private.”

Thirteen people have submitted their Notice of Intention to run for CD7. Democrats have a heavy advantage, so the State is respectfully waiting for Adelita Grijalva to bury her father and announce her decision.
