Arizona’s Republican National Committee member, Senator Jake Hoffman (R-LD15), has declared his unwavering support for former State Representative Cory McGarr in the upcoming Arizona Republican Party (AZGOP) leadership election. Hoffman stated, “As RNC National Committeeman for Arizona, my support for Cory McGarr to be the next chairman of the Arizona Republican Party is unwavering. Cory is the right person to lead our Party and ensure the America First agenda is front and center as we head into the critical 2026 election cycle. He has my full support.”
McGarr, a prominent member of the Freedom Caucus, announced his candidacy following his recent re-election loss in the 2024 election. He emphasized his commitment to empowering grassroots efforts, advocating for the America First agenda, and securing election integrity. His campaign has also garnered support from Arizona National Committee member Liz Harris. The Globe previously covered this race in detail here.
Incumbent Chair Gina Swoboda, who assumed the role in January 2024 after securing 67% of the vote, is seeking re-election. Her leadership was marked by significant fundraising achievements and electoral successes for the party. Swoboda received a notable endorsement from President-elect Donald J. Trump, who, during his AMFEST speech, stated, “We are going to be backing Gina to run again.”
Political analysts suggest that President-elect Trump’s endorsement could play a decisive role in the upcoming AZGOP leadership election, mirroring its impact in recent national contests. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Trump’s backing was instrumental in securing Speaker Mike Johnson’s re-election despite internal party divisions.
Similarly, Trump’s endorsement of incumbent AZGOP Chair Gina Swoboda may provide her with a significant advantage over challenger Cory McGarr. However, others believe Arizona Committee members tend to vote independently in state matters.
According to some insiders, Turning Point USA may offer significant influence in the chairperson election. The conservative organization was instrumental in the 2024 Trump election win and many state races. Although the organization endorsed a party chair candidate in the Michigan GOP race, it’s unclear whether it will do so in Arizona. The Globe spoke with Turning Point executive Tyler Bowyer, who could not confirm whether there would be an Arizona endorsement.
The AZGOP leadership election is scheduled for January 25, 2025, at Dream City Church in Phoenix. Swoboda and McGarr’s contest highlights differing visions for the party’s future direction. The outcome will play a crucial role in shaping the AZGOP’s strategy and leadership as it prepares for the 2026 elections, including key statewide offices: the Governor, Secretary of State, and Attorney General.
