A recent holiday tradition in Fountain Hills, Arizona, is sparking a political dispute between local Republican and Democrat groups. Every year, community organizations decorate themed Christmas trees at the Fountain Hills Community Center. This year, the Republican Club adorned its tree with “Trump 2024” flags, prompting objections from the Democrat counterpart.

Republican State Senator John Kavanagh commented on the dust-up during an appearance on James T. Harris’ “Conservative Circus” radio show, stating that the Democrat reaction has escalated from “Trump Derangement Syndrome” to “Trump Induced Psychosis.” Kavanagh explained that while various clubs participate in this tradition by decorating trees to reflect their interests—such as car clubs adding miniature cars—the Republicans chose to include political symbols supporting President-elect (and former President) Donald Trump.

The Senator also addressed another tradition—decorating wreaths to hang in the community center. The theme of the wreaths includes Arizona’s “5 C’s:” copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and climate. Kavanaugh said that Democrats decided to add a sixth “c” category: “crazy.”

The Fountain Hills Democratic Club reportedly requested that the town administration remove the Republican-decorated tree. However, the town upheld the tradition, which allows each club to express its identity through tree decorations, provided they adhere to community guidelines. Shortly after the denied tree removal request, the Democrats allegedly set up a wreath depicting President-elect Trump’s severed head. The wreath was subsequently removed.

In a press release, Fountain Hills Town Councilman Allen Skillicorn criticized the Democratic Club for what he described as “religious bigotry and an anti-Christmas spirit.” He pointed out that various community groups have different themes for their holiday decorations, stating, “An animal rescue has a rescue theme, the Maricopa Sheriff’s Department has a tree adorned with sheriff badges, the Town’s Public Works Staff has a tree decorated with hard hats, and the Fountain Hills Republican Club is displaying Trump flags celebrating both the 45th and 47th Presidents of the U.S.A. on their tree.”

Skillicorn noted that according to the Democratic Club’s Facebook, the tree they began to plan as a response mocks Christmas and stifles the Christmas spirit. In the Club’s public Facebook Group, members spoke of setting up an abortion-themed tree. Another member proposed decorating a tree with sex toys, while another advocated for a drag queen tree and a trans-themed tree, all to be displayed in the town’s public community center.

Skillcorn said, “While I defend the Fountain Hills Democratic Club’s free speech, I am shocked by the inappropriate and out of touch behavior by FH Dem Club members. The Grinch appears to reside in their hearts. The people of Arizona and Fountain Hills have rejected their sex toy ideology and devotion to confusing children. I defend their right to not believe in Christianity and the Holiday of Christ’s birth, but does that mean they should mock the faith of others? I invite the FH Dems to enjoy some eggnog and twinkly lights, but leave the Bah Humbug at home, behind closed doors.”

Ashley Earle, a board member of the Fountain Hill Republican Club and chair of the club’s Christmas Tree Decorating Contest, expressed her enthusiasm for this year’s holiday display. According to Earle, the Christmas tree created by the Fountain Hills Republican Club—often referred to as the “Trump Tree” by its admirers—serves as a festive representation of the club’s support for liberty and freedom and their excitement for former President Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

“The ‘Trump Tree’ brings joy to many of us who are optimistic about the positive changes President Trump can bring to our country and the world,” Earle stated. “It has been heartwarming to see the community’s response; people have been taking photos with the tree and sharing messages of appreciation for the display.”

Earle added, “I personally feel that the ‘Trump Tree’ brings joy to so many of us who are excited about the positive changes that President Trump is going to bring to our beautiful country and the world. The GOP is extremely excited about President Trump returning to the White House in January—this is definitely something to be grateful for and celebrate this Christmas!”

She also spoke out against any negative comments about the tree, saying, “How terrible it is that anyone would defame any President in this way. It doesn’t seem very American. I would ask them—why would someone do this? How does this celebrate Christmas or any holiday?”

Earle concluded by expressing her personal admiration for President Trump, calling him “a gift from God. ” She also shared her belief that the holiday season is a time to celebrate hope and unity.

The Fountain Hills Christmas tree displays have become a focal point of political expression this year. They illustrate the ongoing divide within the community while highlighting the broader national conversation about freedom of speech and holiday traditions.
