Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen (R-LD14), a third-generation Gilbert resident, was re-elected for a second term as Senate President. Proponents say the advancement of conservative policies and active opposition to initiatives from Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs has marked his leadership.

Petersen took steps to uphold Arizona’s “Save Women’s Sports Act” by intervening in legal proceedings when Attorney General Kris Mayes declined to defend the law. He expressed gratitude to the 24 attorneys general who submitted amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court supporting the act, stating, “Mayes refused to defend the law, so I have intervened. Recently, I spent the day in deposition. I will do all I can to make sure our girls can compete safely and on a fair playing field!”

Petersen was also instrumental in establishing Arizona’s version of the federal Committee on Director Oversight and Government Efficiency (DOGE), focusing on reducing bureaucratic red tape, addressing fraud, and promoting government reform. In his words, “Anything that has to do with red tape, anything that has to do with regulations, anything that has to do with fraud, government waste, government reform, all of those policies would be assigned to this committee.”  The Arizona Assembly calls this committee “Regulatory Affairs and Government Oversight.”

His commitment to border security is evident through his participation in panels with leading attorneys general to discuss legal strategies for securing the border. Petersen’s proactive stance in areas where he perceives the Attorney General’s office has fallen short has fueled speculation about a potential run for Attorney General in 2026. It is rumored that there is a campaign to unseat Attorney General Kris Mayes, and Peterson is being urged to challenge her by multiple Arizona attorneys.

Petersen’s re-election as Senate President this year was notably smooth, with his sole challenger withdrawing even before the Senate voted. He expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him by his colleagues, emphasizing the legislature’s commitment to delivering a conservative agenda that protects liberty and promotes prosperity.

Petersen has a proven track record of conservative principles throughout his tenure, actively engaging in legal and legislative efforts to uphold state laws and policies. Pundits say his actions have positioned him as a significant figure within Arizona’s Republican Party, with many viewing him as a potential candidate for statewide office, most likely Attorney General, in the near future.
