Arizona leaders continue to reflect on the assassination of Charlie Kirk, proving the impact Charlie had on politics, particularly in his last home state, Arizona. Last week, Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen announced plans to honor Kirk by submitting legislation to rename State Route 202 as the “Charlie Kirk Memorial Loop 202.” Petersen stated that the action would help to ensure that Kirk’s message, particularly his unwavering faith, devotion to God, family, and country, and especially his influence on American politics, would never be forgotten. State Route 202 is a major freeway, encircling the eastern and southern portions of the Phoenix metroplex.
Petersen addressed his reasoning in a public statement, saying, “Charlie Kirk died a martyr for his faith, political ideology, and principles of God-given human rights. The legacy Charlie leaves behind should motivate every American to unite and strive for a better nation for our children and grandchildren.”
Petersen added, “I pray that Charlie’s death is not in vain, and know that we will take up his mantle and strive for the ideals that he so courageously articulated and defended during his short time on this earth. Charlie’s memory will live on through every one of us who knew him, his unwavering supporters, and hopefully, every time someone drives on the Loop 202.”
The legislation required to rename the road will likely be introduced in November 2025 for consideration during the 2026 session. Early indicators suggest that the legislation will likely face support and opposition along party lines.
